If it rains

The question everybody asks before they book

Most outfitters bury this in terms and conditions. It is the single biggest reason people close the tab, so here it is in plain language above everything else.

Rain alone does not cancel

You are getting wet regardless. We run in light and steady rain, and most people say an overcast day on the river beats a hot one.

Lightning does

If there is lightning within ten miles at your launch time we hold on the bank, and if it does not clear inside an hour you choose a reschedule or a full refund.

High water does

Above 4.2 feet on the Cartecay gauge we do not put beginners on the river. We watch it all week and call you the day before, not the morning of.

Best time to come

The river is not the same in April as it is in August

Nobody tells you this before you book, and then you drive two hours for a float that was better six weeks ago. Typical water levels by month, and what each one is good for.

Big water. Rafting at its best, too cold and pushy for tubing. Steady. Everything runs. Closed, or too low for guided trips.

So which trip do you actually want?

If you are driving up from Atlanta for the day, this is the part worth thirty seconds.

  • March and AprilFull day or half day. Cold, fast and the best rafting of the year. Not a tubing month.
  • May through JulyAnything. Warm water, reliable level, and the busiest weekends, so book ahead.
  • August and SeptemberTube float. The river is low and slow, which is perfect for a lazy afternoon and poor for rafting.
  • October and NovemberHalf day, and the leaves are the reason to come. Water is coming back up and the crowds are gone.
